The age old tradition of massaging babies has many advantages for both you and your baby. It’s no wonder that baby massage is such a widely followed practice in India that has been passed down from mother to daughter for generations.
Baby massage is gentle, rhythmic stroking of your baby’s body with your hands. You can use oils or a moisturizer to help your hands to glide smoothly over your baby’s skin.
The soothing strokes of your hands stimulate the production of the feel-good hormone oxytocin in you, your baby and even your partner, if he’s watching. Oxytocin is the hormone that gives you that warm, loving feeling when you hold your baby close to you.
You may find that giving your baby a massage lifts your mood and helps you to feel more empowered as a parent. The time you set aside for a massage can be your special time together. As you massage your baby, it comes naturally to chat to her and have plenty of eye contact.
Baby massage is a wonderful bonding opportunity that benefits your child and you. In many ways, touch is our first language. Gentle and loving touch can help small babies grow stronger and feel less anxiety. Infants who are touched display more eye contact, smiles and vocalizations.
The touch between you and your baby brings you emotionally close. A process known also as ‘bonding’ or ‘attachment’. In addition to helping you and your baby bond, regular massage may:
- Soothe baby and reduce crying
- Aid digestion and help relieve colic, gas, and constipation
- Help baby sleep more deeply and longer
- Relieve nasal congestion and teething discomfort
- Help develop good muscle tone, coordination, and suppleness
- Enhance body awareness
- Boost the immune system
- Improve skin texture
- Help calm and relax both parent and baby
- Boost parents’ confidence in handling baby
What to bring to the workshop:
- Towels or muslin squares to mop up any accidents
- Clothes to dress your baby in afterwards
- Your usual napy-changing-kit
Massage oil or an emollient cream is available at our location. If you prefer your own oils, please feel free to bring them with you.
In a 2,5 hour session we will learn and practice the most common techniques for a total baby’s body massage and become confident with touching and massaging.
It is best to start massaging your baby after the umbilical stump falls off. Best time to join is from that moment until 8-9 months, when your baby starts crawling or walking. At that phase you might find that she doesn’t want to lie still for that long.
